Our Students: Kalina Zaburtova

My name is Kalina, I'm 18 years old and I've been playing piano for 2 and a half years, and I've been going to Rockschool lessons with Maria Yankova for almost 4 months. Playing music is one of my hobbies and besides that I also like to draw.

How did you decide to study music?

Since I was a little girl I dreamed of playing an instrument. I had hesitations between guitar, violin, flute and piano but I didn't have the courage to decide and tell my parents to sign me up for lessons, I was scared of almost everything. In 2021 I became ambitious and I have chosen the piano. It all started with the idea of acquiring a new skill.

What was the first song you learned?

Most likely "Mary had a little lamb" or another children's song haha.

What kind of music did you grow up with?

I grew up with a lot of quality music, a variety of genres, but mostly rock. I continue to listen to almost all of those artists to this day, and more like that, here are some of them: Queen, David Bowie, Pink Floyd, The Beatles, INXS, Depeche Mode, The Doors, Michael Jackson, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Sade and more.

What is your favourite concert you have been to?

Last July I went to a Depeche Mode concert in Bucharest and it was amazing. It was raining, there were flashes of lightning which created a great atmosphere with the music in the background which was also perfect. It's a memory that will live forever in my mind.

With whom do you dream of going on stage?

Honestly, I never imagined there was a chance for me to go on stage. When I first started performing, whether it was because of anxiety and stage fright, it was the last thing on my mind, and now it's not much different either. If I had to daydream, I'd say it'd be wonderful if I could muster up the courage to go out on my own (whether with piano or otherwise) or be part of a cool group of my peers, but for now those are just fantasies.

And whose concert do you dream of going to?

Unfortunately, most of the artists whose concerts I want to go to are not among the living, so I don't have one lined up right now.

What does music give you?

Music gives me peace and solitude, it challenges me, it transports me into its own vast world and it embellishes mine. For me it is like time spent in nature, a breath of fresh air.

What has changed in you since you have been involved in music?

Since I started doing music I look at things a lot more creatively.

What do you listen to when you don't know what you want to listen to?

Usually then I play something lighter like jazz, sometimes soul, blues or classical music. I really like the general Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong albums. Lately I've also been listening to Aretha Franklin, a little Etta James. When it comes to classical music I don't understand much, but my favorite is a record of Strauss waltzes we have at home

What helps you learn faster?

For me, my efficiency and speed of learning depends on my personal discipline, which is mostly influenced by the desire and interest I have in what I am playing.I don't always enjoy everything I have to learn, of course, and then the incentive comes from being reminded of the main goal and the idea that even if it is difficult, the effort put in will be meaningful and applied.

What is RockSchool to you?

RockSchool is still an unfamiliar and new place for me, but even in the small amount of time I've been there, I can say I've enjoyed it and it has lived up to my expectations. When I found out about RockSchool, I was very happy that I was given choice and freedom.

What does RockSchool give you besides piano lessons?

RockSchool provides a variety of opportunities, competence, friendliness, cool people, new knowledge, new acquaintances. As someone who is shy and afraid to try new things, RockSchool is the right place for me, I feel great there.

What's your favourite thing about piano lessons with Maria Yankova at Rockschool?

It would be harder to say what is not my favorite. Although then I would say the metronome work, but there are people who find it enjoyable lol. I adore Maria's lessons to say the least and I love the dynamics of the flow, the way we get along and her dedication.Classes with her keep me ambitious, stimulated and I look forward to them every week.

What does music teach you on a daily basis ?

It teaches me patience, calmness, improves my discipline. It helps me even with simpler things like finger flexibility, wrist relaxation, reminds me to sit and walk straighter. It gives me confidence, creativity, reminds me to contemplate and enjoy the process. Music reminds me that it is all around us, and how much benefit I can get from it.

What is your message to anyone who has decided to pursue music?

My wish is for everyone who wants to develop themselves in this field to find their place in it and reach their potential. To get into the message that music contains and use the opportunity to expand their worldview through it.
